5/3/2023 0 Comments Mini ramp near me![]() These can grow in size and eventually make the mini ramp unusable, in addition to making repairs more and more expensive. Gaps and cracks in plywood should be filled not only to stop sound from escaping but also for the safety and longevity of your ramp. This is especially relevant on the metal components like the coping, as metal rings out and can echo loudly. In fact, the sound can reverberate and get louder inside the ramp before escaping. Mini ramps themselves absorb a lot of sound, but a large portion of that absorption can be lost to any openings. This includes any gaps between plywood, cracks that have appeared over time, ends of the metal coping, and possibly even the back of the ramp itself. Covering OpeningsĪnother key step that can often be overlooked is covering any openings in the ramp. Not only will this help reduce any rattling or movement of the ramp, it also ensures a much safer ramp experience.Ī thickness of at least ¾ plywood is a necessity, although going up to 1 inch is certainly not a bad idea. The sides of the ramp are an area where thick plywood is absolutely essential. This can happen when there are not enough supports underneath the plywood, or when the plywood used to craft the sides of the ramp is too thin. Making Great Ramp SidesĪnother less common but certainly annoying area where a ramp can make noise is if the whole ramp is shaking. To help with this, use thicker plywood here and add a few more supports underneath.īecause skaters will rarely actually skate the top of the ramp (ignoring the metal coping, which will be covered later), this area needs less give than other parts of the ramp. The main source of sound coming from the top of the ramp is when users of the mini ramp will drop in or grab the ledge, placing almost their full body weight onto one area. During construction, utilizing thick plywood or stacking other materials here can help dampen the sound. The top of the mini ramp, where skaters drop in from, also sees a lot of movement and can make a significant amount of noise. This is important even if the final layer of your mini ramp will not be plywood. If you are using different thicknesses of plywood for ramp construction, you need to make sure they are level for the end construction. So, the smartest play here is to utilize thick plywood for the surfacing of the ramp here. Thickening only the supports can come with issues, as the surface of the mini ramp needs to be able to give and move. ![]() ![]() The thicker these supports underneath, commonly made from 2x4s, the less give the ramp will have. When building your mini ramp, there should be support directly at the transition to stop the plywood from flexing so much under the weight of the rider. This is where the ramp meets the flat of the mini ramp. The transitions of the mini ramp are the most common area where a lot of noise will be made. While thick plywood across the board will help significantly in dampening sound, there are some key areas to focus on if you want to maximize your budget. If the budget for building your mini ramp is a main concern, do not worry. Depending on the size of your mini ramp, grabbing thick plywood for the entire ramp may be infeasible due to the increase in cost. There are also sizes in between commonly available at hardware stores. The average thickness of plywood ½ inch, but up to 1 inch is commonly available. If your mini ramp was bought from an outlet and constructed from a different material, this method may be hard for you to enact. Most ramps are made out of plywood, so this is the most important material to get thicker. Using thicker construction materials will allow for the ramp itself to absorb some of the sounds. One of the easiest ways to soundproof your ramp also comes earliest in the process. While you are unlikely to lose your hearing from the sounds of skating on a mini ramp, a deafening of hearing ability can surely happen. In addition, protecting your ears from repetitive, loud sounds is always a good idea for future ear health. This means that often, they will not complain about you skating and you can do so freely. The quieter you can skate your mini ramp, the less of obstruction you will be to others. These are reasons to soundproof your ramp beyond the classic, good-natured case of wanting to make your skating a pleasant experience for others. It can be difficult to hear what’s around you while skating on a mini ramp. The sound bothers you after a period of time. Before getting into the myriad of ways there are to help soundproof your ramp, it is a good idea to list the reasons why you might need to in the first place.Įven if you do not have neighbors or other people complaining about the noise, there are still reasons to soundproof your setup.

Read this story about an orphaned chick that was hand-raised: Seymour the Shoebill © Gerhard Pretorius ![]() ![]() Both the chicks and the adults engage in bill-clattering during the nesting season as a means of communication. While attending the nest, adults perform bill-clattering displays, accompanied sometimes by a whiney-mewing muttering that often elicits a ‘hiccupping’ gurgle from their chicks as they beg in anticipation for food. Shoebills will usually have two chicks, but only the one who proves to be the strongest survives – the other is left to die. While they may look stork-like, taxonomically speaking they share more traits with the Pelecaniformes (herons and pelicans), and molecular studies have found the hamerkop to be the closest relative of the shoebill.ħ. © Kevin BartlettĦ. Shoebills have a little bit of an identity crisis. Shoebills have specially adapted long toes (up to 18cm heel to toe) with no webbing which helps them to balance on the swampy vegetation while stalking prey. They also have a nictitating membrane – a translucent layer that protects their eyes – which is used when hunting and preening. Other fascinating techniques to cool down involve defecating on their legs (as storks do too), or gular fluttering – the same as dog panting.ĥ. A lungfish © Flickr/ Joel AbroadĤ. Their large bill comes in very handy to carry large ‘gulps’ of fresh water back to the nest in order to douse eggs or chicks when the sweltering heat of the swamps drives temperatures beyond normality. Then, whilst keeping its head aloft from the water, it will slide its bill sideways so as to severe its prey, while the water and vegetation snatched up in the strike spills out from the edges of the bill. Head first, gape open, and wings spread, it smashes through the vegetation in the hopes of coming up with a fish. Like a geological fault accumulating kinetic energy, this blue monolith will bolt downwards when triggered loose by the rippling of an incoming fish. Shoebills use their bills to strike their prey, known as a “collapse”, and its the antitheses of its patient stalking technique. Granted, shoebills don’t fly very far or very often, but flying is no mean feat considering they can grow up to 1.5m tall and weigh up to 7kg!Ģ. Shoebills eat fish that look almost as prehistoric as they do! Although shoebills have been known to gulp down other birds, baby crocodiles, frogs, terrapins, water snakes and even small mammals, the lungfish is their staple diet.ģ. Their distinguishing feature is the enormous shoe-shaped bill, measuring an incredible 20-24 centimetres in length and 10-12 centimetres in width, with a razor-sharp, curved hook at the end. They may be big, but they can fly if they want to. Here are seven reasons to love this big bird:ġ. Despite his prehistoric appearance and the craziness that is his proportions, the shoebill stork is actually quite endearing if you bother to dig a little deeper. ![]() He has massive feet, an enormous beak and is very, very tall for a bird. His dimensions too are something of an eye-opener. In profile, one can see the array of dishevelled tufts of feathers that shoot out at all angles from his crown. From almost any other angle though, he’s a total hoot. The King Whale-Head (the English translation of Balaeniceps rex) appears from the front like an old university professor, big-nosed, peering over his spectacles. Found in the marshes of East Africa, the shoebill is classified as vulnerable and is a bucket-list sighting for any avid birder. From December 2015 to June 2021, he said, Ascension’s ratio of bedside nursing capacity to its discharged patients has increased by 64 percent, with staff increasing and discharges holding roughly steady.Īcademics who study hospital workforces cautioned that the metric makes Ascension’s staffing conditions seem better than they are. Ragone said the chain has more employees relative to patients than many of its peers. Unlike some rivals, Ascension avoided layoffs early in the pandemic, and Mr. The head of an Ascension hospital in Baltimore last year blamed staffing shortages for the emergency room being dangerously overcrowded. In Michigan alone late last year, the chain had 1,100 nursing vacancies. But it left Ascension flat-footed for Covid.ĭuring surges in the coronavirus, Ascension repeatedly reduced its capacity by more than 500 beds nationwide because it did not have enough workers. ![]() The yearslong effort - a combination of widespread layoffs and attrition - rarely attracted public attention. ![]() In the years before the pandemic, they routinely refused requests to hire more medical workers or fill open jobs, according to current and former hospital administrators and employees. At one point, executives boasted to their peers about how they had slashed $500 million from the chain’s labor costs. The exodus stems from many factors, with the hospital industry blaming Covid, staff burnout and tight labor markets for acute shortages of staff.Īscension, which runs 139 hospitals, among the most of any chain in the United States, is emblematic of the industrywide movement to keep labor costs low.Īs recently as 2019, Ascension was trumpeting its success at reducing its number of employees per occupied bed, a common industry staffing metric. Since the start of the pandemic, nurses have been leaving hospitals in droves. It spent years reducing its staffing levels in an effort to improve profitability, even though the chain is a nonprofit organization with nearly $18 billion of cash reserves. Chronic understaffing meant that patients languished in dried feces, while robots replaced nursing assistants who would normally sit with mentally impaired patients.īoth hospitals are owned by one of the country’s largest health systems, Ascension. Nurses were so distraught about the inadequate staffing that they banded together to file formal complaints every day for more than a month.Ībout 300 miles away, at a hospital outside Flint, Mich., similar scenes were unfolding. At a hospital in a Chicago suburb last winter, there were so few nurses that psychiatric patients with Covid were left waiting a full day for beds, and a single aide was on hand to assist with 32 infected patients. 5/3/2023 0 Comments Virtualdj 2007I actually think the banality is just as exciting,” Enso enthuses. 22-11-2022 - First, close the VirtualDJ LE.
